How to Keep Kids Smiling During Pictures

Being a photographer I work with kids a lot and have had my fair share of grumpy kiddos. Some not wanting to smile, or not wanting to be around a stranger! I have parents all the time, “I don’t think my kids are going to smile, or even be happy about taking pictures.” Don’t worry, I’ve got a few tricks that can get even the toughest little kid to smile. I’ve got a couple super powers that give me a little bit of an advantage. First, I’m a Grandma, I know all the things that make little kids smile and laugh. I’ve had practice with my granddaughter Mia. Secondly, I’m patient. Sometimes it takes time for kids to warm up and feel safe to be in a new space like my studio.

We’re going to make sure we have a gameplan going into your session to be prepared for anything. First, we’re going to chat about what your kid loves, what music they listen to, any games they like to play and get a feel for what makes them smile. Then if during the session they get a little grumpy we have a few personalized suggestions for your child.

One of my tricks to make any child smile is playing silly games like patty cake, or peek-a-boo or whatever else they like to play. Not only does this begin to make them feel comfortable around me, but it gets them engaged and looking at the camera. I love playing games because it gets them excited for what’s coming next.

I may have parents jump in for a quick tickle to get the children laughing and smiling. This is a great way to get them focused and back on track. My next secret weapon, music! Let’s put the music they love to dance to on at the studio. Kids love being able to listen to their special music and feel like they’re at home. I love playing their favorite songs, their eyes immediately light up, and it’s picture time!

Lastly, we bring out their favorite apps, this helps give them a break if they’re beginning to get a little bit overwhelmed! We’ll give them a quick break, and let them relax and cooldown, then try again! Being a children’s photographer takes a ton of patience, and I’m totally prepared for any curve balls thrown my way!
