How To Pick A Newborn Photographer
When it comes to finding a newborn photographer it is easy to become overwhelmed. Because let’s face it, you already have a lot on your plate! You are getting ready to have a baby which comes with a lot. Decorating the nursery, washing all the clothes and sheets, birthing classes, birthing plans, the list seriously goes on and on! That is why I wanted to create a simple list of things to consider when looking for your newborn photographer, to make this chaotic time less stressful.
Location
I cannot stress this enough! Find a newborn photographer that is local to you, or willing to travel. You just had a baby, you shouldn’t have to travel more than 30 minutes for newborn photos. And if you find a newborn photographer that you REALLY love, then maybe travel up to an hour.
Traveling may not seem like the end of the world, but there are a few reasons you want to stay relatively close to home. You just had a baby and your body is still healing. It may be uncomfortable to be in the car too long. And the reason that really makes a difference in your newborn photos is your baby! Some babies hate being in the car soon after birth, they would rather be on your chest. And other babies love the car and fall right to sleep. Either way, the longer you are in the car the more likely it is to have a fussy baby.
Do Some Digging!
When you find a newborn photographer that you think you would like to work with start digging through their galleries! Focus on their editing style and how they pose baby. Things like swaddles, bows and props can always be switched out, but editing styles and posing seems to stay consistent. Take note of the poses that they use that you love! Your newborn photographer should be willing to work with you to get the perfect shot of your newborn!
Timeline
Newborn photography is something that can get booked quick! Once you are about one trimester in, I would advice that you start you search to find a newborn photographer. By the time you are 20 weeks, or in your last trimester at the latest, you should have your newborn photographer booked! By booking in advance you assure that you get a spot when your baby is still itty-bitty. You never know when there will be an influx of newborns in your area, so you want to be ahead of the game!
Have A Chat!
Be sure to get on the phone with your newborn photographer! Talk about their gallery, and what you like about it. Discuss your favorite poses that you have seen, maybe some that you don’t like too much. Talk about how you want to incorporate different items, like inherited bonnets or plushies. And who you want to include in your newborn photo session. Ask all the questions and be ready to learn! They may give you some great tips to prepare, or just heartwarming pep talks. Form a relationship over that phone call so that you feel comfortable with your newborn photographer and confident in their abilities!
As a newborn photographer I love working with moms who are really interested in their newborn photos. I want to work with you to capture the sweetness of your baby as a newborn, so that you will never forget these precious moments!
