Being a newborn photographer, I have a plethora of props and am always on the hunt for something cute for all my precious newborns. I love being able to show off the newborns and their precious features, with fun little items in the background that either relate to their family, and are unique to them, or are just pretty and fun. When booking a newborn session with me, don’t worry about coming with tons of props or a variety of outfits, swaddles or headbands…I have it all! I’ve got you and your baby covered for your session.

Here are some of the most popular props for my newborn sessions.

  • Headbands. Did you guess it right? I love headbands in photo sessions because they add a nice delicate touch while not overwhelming baby. They’re also great because they’re easy to slip on and off, which means quick changes and more photos for you! One of my favorite styling tips for newborn girls photos, is to try and keep the headbands on the smaller side. By keeping them smaller you are able to see baby girl’s face and features more clearly.

  • Baskets. This may sound a bit funny, but all those cute pictures you see of babies all bundled up and curled up are done in baskets, and things of that nature. They are one of my favorites to use because it adds a nice cozy element to the photo, while being a safe option for keeping baby secure!

  • Pillows. In the photos you may not be able to tell, but in the majority of my newborn photo sessions pillows are all over the set. Here’s why, it’s great for safety. Pillows keep baby comfortable and safe at all times. It’s super easy to throw a blanket over and create a new backdrop, and can be used as a base for more props!

  • Hats. Just like for girls with headbands, hats are super popular in studio in Idaho Falls. We use hats or beanies on boys and girls alike, it adds a whimsical touch to photos and the newborns look so darn cute! It’s all about creating a scene during the session, and beanies and hats are a great way to do that.

  • Stuffed Animals. Such a fun and cute addition to any shot, and a great way to add in a personal touch to the photos! If baby was gifted a special stuffed animal bring it to the session. I love when we can add something unique and personal to the photos, and a family stuffed animal is a great way to do that.

  • Swaddles. While this may seem like clothing more than a prop, I like to include it because we use them as props in a lot of photos. I love using swaddles in my sessions for a couple reasons, first, it helps babies feel warm and safe during sessions. Babies love being held and cuddled, so swaddling them during a session is a no brainer! Secondly, swaddles add such a fun cozy look to any session and are a great way to add variety without much effort.

I have been so blessed to shoot tons of newborn sessions in my studio, we’ve done baseballs, flowers, baskets, all kinds of fun things. When you schedule a newborn session with me, we’ll work together to brainstorm ideas and props you want to be used during your child’s newborn session. I’ll open my closet of swaddles and props and we’ll go to town planning and designing!
