As moms, we feel this immense pressure to plan the biggest and best birthday parties and events for our children, especially in their first year of life. Things have to be a huge deal because it’s their first time doing well, everything! Milestone sessions are some of my favorites to be apart of because it reminds me of when I was in YOUR shoes planning these events. I wish I knew back then to let these grandiose expectations slide, and just enjoy the moment. Just like them experiencing it for the first time, you are too!

However, if you are planning a milestone session, here are some of my favorite tips to ensure a fun experience with those beautiful pictures.

First tip, is for all my moms out there. Try and relax! I know easier said than done, but try to enjoy the experience and let your child be a kid, let them smash the cake and get frosting everywhere, let them get frosting on you, and let them giggle and enjoy themselves. When mom is relaxed, baby is relaxed and we get the best pictures.

Go on Pinterest! I know you’re already doing it, but go on Pinterest and show me some of your inspiration and what you’re thinking for your shoot. It’s always easier to come into a consultation with an idea of what you like and the aesthetic you’re going for during the shoot. Then, we’re able to go through my closet of goodies and figure out what’s going to work for your dream session.

Tip #3, start planning early! Give yourself time to plan things exactly how you want and give yourself time to be creative. It’s always super stressful to be figuring out and planning the day before an event. I have shot dozens of milestone sessions, and can be a great resource for planning, bouncing ideas off each other and being there to support you. The pictures are going to be great, give yourself time and grace to enjoy the moment!

Lastly, don’t be afraid to jump in for a couple pictures! It’s always so fun to see the parents or siblings experience the cake smash alongside their child or sibling. It is a moment of pure joy and laughter that you’ll have captured forever. We’ll make sure to get all the cute pictures of your sweet baby covered in cake, but let’s get some of you too.
